I went digging and couldn't turn up anything, substantial or otherwise, about Matt Moylan. I need to know how low to place my expectations for my second favorite mega men, because it sounds like "pretty damn low"

Matt Moylan is the Director of Publishing over at Udon. He's been there for ages. He's also a total reactionary.

To give full context, this is gonna get a little long.

Moylan is perhaps best known for the Transformers fancomic Lil Formers, which was popular in the '00s. This isn't super important here, but allow me to go on a tangent because it's where a lot of people know the guy from, and it's mildly more entertaining than just screencapping his tweets. The comic was basically just an excuse for him to draw a bunch of chibi Transformers that people would then use in forum signatures and whatnot. Sometimes he would attach his cranky old geewunner opinions and complain about art style changes or new female characters in the dialogue, if he wasn't just making a generic joke about Wheelie being annoying or Seaspray having a silly voice or whatever.

Comedy gold, I know.

Lil Formers was well known within the fandom. Geewunners and kids who didn't know any better and just liked the chibi Transformers (guilty) loved it. Other fans grew more annoyed by Moylan's schtick. As far back as 2009 TFWiki contributor David Willis mocked it in a strip from his own webcomic, Shortpacked:

His wiki page on TFWiki also recounts a bizarre old bit of fandom drama. Moylan had previously worked for the defunct comic publisher Dreamwave, who published the Transformers comics in the early '00s, and in 2006 he went on popular Transformers forum TFW2005 to make several claims about behind the scenes conflicts and unfulfilled story plans. Most bizarre was a claim that Autobot Sunstreaker was supposed to be gay in the Dreamwave comics, which was written off as a childish attempt to rile up the fandom. His claims were all vehemently disputed by the Dreamwave writers he was shit talking, who would also accuse Moylan of anonymously slandering them and sending them threatening emails. Swell guy!

Anyway, hopefully this isn't surprising to literally anyone who's been on a forum in the last decade, but this nerd who won't shut up about the Good Ol' Days of the '80s is now a reactionary conservative who complains about how they're making everything "woke." And unfortunately he's no longer just some guy drawing dumb little one-panel comics about Transformers, he's now overseeing all of the output at Capcom's go-to comic and art book publisher in North America.

Here's some of his tweets to illustrate what he's like these days.

Yes, that's a reply to Mark "Grummz" Kern. He's also chatted up accounts like Libs of Tiktok and Comicsgate ringleader Ethan Van Sciver. Also note the reply in which he tries to tell Greg Weisman himself that Gargoyles had "not an ounce of woke." This guy's brain is fucking cooked.

Here's a take he posted about The Boys, too, just because it's really fucking funny to me:

After I and several other people posted about his behavior over on Bluesky and expressed disinterest in buying anything from Udon (such as the new Mega Man comics), he deleted his Twitter for like a week. He's since restored it, the tweets in question now long gone. Clearly it wasn't a good look for him to be making statements about his employer's values like this, sometimes in the same breath as announcements about new comics. That being said, he's issued no actual apology for his statements, and Udon hasn't acknowledged it at all. There's no reason to believe he's had a change of heart. They're just gonna pretend he never said any of this. And as of a few days ago, he's been announced as the writer for the one-shot Mega Man ZX comic that Udon is putting out later this year. Yaaaayyyy

I know there are a lot of cool people working on stuff for Udon, but Moylan being in a position of power there means I have zero interest in giving that company money. When your Director of Publishing is over on Twitter trying to court an audience of reactionary nerds and proudly proclaiming that Udon is "anti-woke, anti-DEI," and then you go to their website and the first image you see is this...

...Look, I love huge boobs as much as the next bisexual furry pervert, but this particular image in conjunction with his tweets paints a pretty clear picture of what sort of values Moylan is pushing at Udon. He wants to cater to nerds who will buy softcore Street Fighter hentai thinking it'll own the libs.

So hey, if he doesn't want my dirty woke money, fine by me. I'm not touching anything Udon publishes as long as Matt Moylan still works there.

Scaramouche fears no man.

But he does fear four women.

1. Ei — his mother

2. Yae Miko — his mother’s “friend”

3. Nahida — his aunt

4. You — the highlight of his life

There’s no particular order. It depends on the day. Although tonight, that might be the case.

The bamboo pendant lamp hangs beautifully in the intricate walls if Uyuu Restaurant. An order of Tricolor Dango, Shimi Chazuke, Fukuuchi Udon, and Halvamazd scatter along the floor table. Scara settles across his mother. Yae Miko finds the spot next to her and beside him, Nahida chats away with the restaurant owner who introduces himself and the specialties he’d prepared in advance.

Four dishes for four people.

“What a funny guy! What’s his name again?” Yae Miko asks after the owner left.

“I believe it’s Okazaki Rikuto,” Nahida answers as she scans the roster of food available. Scara notices the eagerness in her eyes. Sometimes, his aunt resembles that of a child – if only she wasn’t so perceptive.

“Care to share your thoughts?” Nahida asks.

There it is – as always.

Scara clears his throat, “No. Let’s eat.”

It will have to wait.

Minutes of uncomfortable silence fills the room. A wave of anxiety begins to envelop Scara’s thoughts. Considering his intrepid personality, he’s sure that even outsiders can tell the absurdity of his actions – from fumbling his chopsticks to checking his phone every passing second. It’s a telltale sight. He curses himself.

“Whatever you wanted to discuss with us, you should do it now,” Ei states calmly. Although It’s not a suggestion, rather a demand.

Scara clears his throat a second time. There’s hesitation in his words. But stalling will get him nowhere, “I’ve been seeing someone.”

Yae Miko looks up grinning, “A therapist?”

The urge to say “fuck you” and hold up a middle finger begins to increase.

“Miko,” his mother warns. Scara can’t tell the expression Ei is wearing – he can never tell with her. He hates that. She is uncertainty, someone he’ll never fully understand.

Nahida interjects, “Is it [name]? I’ve seen articles and comments.”

Scara nods.

Always so perceptive.

Yae Miko Gasps, a hand over her mouth, “Oh the poor girl. I can’t believe she chose you.”

“Miko!” Ei screams.

A simple “fuck you” might not be enough. One more comment from the pink haired lady and they’ll have to call the ambulance – and it’s not for the right reasons.

Yae Miko looks at him with false pity, “You do know, it’s bad to lie–”

Ei cuts her off, “When can we meet her?”

Scara is caught off guard in the best way possible.

A genuine smile is written on his mother’s face – satisfaction.

“You should’ve invited her tonight,” Nahida added, “I’m a big fan of her work.”

He’s dreaming. He has to be.

“I had no faith in you,” Yae Miko says matter-of-factly.

Nevermind. He’s not dreaming.

“Look, you were a socially awkward child – a problem child, even now.”

He’s never been in a cat fight, but today might be it. Should he pull the top of her hair first or the bottom? Which one would be more efficient, he wonders. Venti would know.

“I mean Ei, do you remember the time–”

Or perhaps he should ask Heizou for blackmail materials. Then perhaps his mother would finally cut her off. Taking down the Yae Publishing House… What an exciting thought.

Scara tunes out the voice of his primary hater.

“Next time, you and [name] should visit Tenshukaku. I’d love to meet her,” his mother says in-between giggles.

“You’re not upset?” He asks, just to make sure.

Ei looks offended, “Why would I be?”

“Well–” He halts, not sure of what to say, “Because of the scandals…”

He doesn’t care about those trivial issues, but they might.

Nahida giggles, “For someone who doesn’t seem to care about people’s opinions, you sure are obedient today.“

“I just wanted to make sure.”

Ei shakes his head, “I know I never told you this, but I’ve always wanted the best for you,” She hesitates, “I apologize for making it hard for you to tell me simple things like this. I’m not a perfect mother, but I’m glad you’re sharing a part of your life with me – with us.”

He doesn’t know how to respond, merely nods.

If you were here, you would’ve loved them and they would’ve loved you.

He’s sure of that now. He’s wrong for doubting them.

“But anyway, is there something [name] would like? I can send her newly-made desserts from the shop.”

Yae Miko interjects, “Does she read light novels? I can give her a discount.”

“Or maybe she likes plants? Have you given her Padisarahs? Rainbow Roses? It’s supposed to mean passion and romantic encounters,” Nahida suggests.

Ei lights up, “Oh I know! A copy of your childhood photo album – you were an adorable kid.”

“Mom!”

“Hey, I’m sure she’d want it.”

She’s right.

Did you know that NHK has officially published recipes from Tsukutabe?

Cuz I sure as hell didn't. I happened to see an announcement from them in anticipation for season 2 of the series (which starts tomorrow!!) and I wanted to share! The official website of the drama series gives recipes for many of the recipes from season 1 of the show (most of which are the same dishes or very similar to the original manga). They're all in Japanese, but you can get pretty reasonable instructions with a translate tool. Here they are!

I'm really happy I found out about these, definitely gonna recreate some of these!! I already made the miso riceballs once when I was rewatching the show with my roommate, and we just used some recipe we found online. Now we have the legit version :D Definitely wanna make the pumpkin pudding someday. I'm super happy this exists even though it doesn't have all the recipes from the show, like for the udon that Kasuga makes for Nomoto, or their homemade gyoza. I hope they'll continue releasing recipes for the dishes of season 2 as it airs as well!

Picked up the first volume of Ashita no Joe from Kinokuniya yesterday and was disappointed to find one of the pages was damaged. My copy was shrink wrapped. Ordinarily I wouldn't make such a fuss about this but Kodansha is charging $60 per volume.

And you know what the kicker is? Despite being a hardcover release, they use the cheapest paper quality imaginable! I'm not kidding, it's like newspaper quality. What's the point of making it a hardcover then? Udon Entertainment's release of Rose of Versailles retail at $40 each but those have really beautiful hardcovers and use high quality paper. You really feel like you get your money's worth. This Ashita no Joe release just feels like a rip-off.

I don't get why US manga publishers feel the need to give every older release some over-the-top release. Just release a standard paperback! Or if you're going to do a hardcover release, make sure the paper isn't shit quality. Seven Seas Entertainment's Cutie Honey was another higher priced, hard cover release with cheap paper. Guess what? It was a flop! I know the Honey manga isn't the best but I can't help but feel like it would've sold better if they would've done a more economical release.

We invited fans to ask questions about “Vesperia” for the staff to answer. Don't miss the facts revealed here!

Q: Why is Flynn so friendly with Estelle? I'm curious about what happened between them!

A: The specifics of how they met are unknown, but when Flynn began serving at the castle of the Imperial Capital, Estelle was already in a house arrest-like situation. Estelle wasn’t able to make real friends and felt lonely, so Flynn tried his best to treat her as ruggedly honest and sincerely as he could (while the other knights consistently treated her like a child). He was one of the few people (and someone in her same generation) who continued to treat her like a human being. That must have made Estelle feel very comfortable with him.

Q: Please tell us how old Duke was when he was a knight. Also, how did Duke and Elsifur meet, and what led to their friendship?

A: Duke was once a member of the Knights, but such records have been erased. Thus, his precise age is not known. Unable to adapt to Imperial society at a young age, he chose to travel alone in the dangerous outside world, where he met Elucifer. Their deep compassion for their shared world led the two of them to forming a friendship that transcended race.

Q: In the skit, “About the Elite Guard”, it was suggested that the large scale of responsibility and pressure is what caused Alexei to behave the way he did, but what made him go to such lengths? Considering his strength, it feels like something huge must have happened… Also, what was the meaning of Alexei’s final tears? “Tears of realizing he was the biggest jester of all” or “tears of regret for everything he had done up until then”? Please tell us the meaning from your perspective as the developers!

A: From the outside, Alexei appears to be nothing more than an arrogant villain, but he was once a truly respectable person. While pursuing his goals, he gradually began looking down on others who couldn’t keep up and was no longer picky about his methods. Unfortunately, nobody ever questioned his methods, and nobody pointed it out to him. To the bitter end, he thought he was doing what he had to do; but at the very last moment, what should have been a success, in reality, was the situation he least wanted. He shed tears of despair as he realized who had truly been the foolish one.

Q: Why does Repede dislike Estelle (not that he hates her, but maybe he just doesn't like her?)? Does he avoid her because he’s actually an Entelexeia? Considering he doesn’t get ferocious when in dense aer, it seems like maybe he’s becoming an Entelxeia who can adapt to aer.

A: Repede is, after all, a (bit of a perceptive) dog. Yuri jokes about it in a weird way, but he is a dog. At first, he avoided Estelle because he doesn’t like being teased, and he doesn’t like people who are not down to earth.

Q: The members of Brave Vesperia were Yuri, Repede, Karol, and Judith; but after Part 2 ended, did the other party members join Brave Vesperia? I've been curious, so please let me know!

A: The official members of the guild remain three people and one pet until the very end. However, everyone in the party is a “comrade” to “Brave Vesperia”. In their hearts, all of them are "members." As well as being the name of their guild, "Brave Vesperia" is a term that also represents the bonds between them.

Q: How did Raven kidnap Estelle at Myorzo? It was said that he used Estelle's power to activate the core of the warp blastia, but did he manage to woo Estelle?

A: It’s possible he used some sort of tool to take away Estelle’s freedom, similar to what Alexei used, that had the ability to control her and use her powers to activate the warp blastia.

Q: In the ending, all of the blastia are lost, but Raven's blastia heart is not lost and he continues to live. Is this because the energy powering his blastia heart is not the aer, but Raven's own life force?

A: That’s right. Incidentally, the blastia heart and he himself interpolate with each other to maintain their functions, but it's not a perpetual motion machine. He himself has to eat to replenish it. In that regard, it's the same as a flesh-and-blood heart.

A: His tone changes depending on his position at the time. However, since he chose to live as Raven, that’s probably closer to his true self.

After defeating the Adephagos, the Empire and the guilds decided to work together, so Raven will make the best use of his influential positions on both sides. In the ending illustration, we see not only the Knights, but guild members there alongside them, suggesting that a mixed squad has been formed.

Zagi modified his left arm into a blastia, but did he do it himself? Also, does Zagi die in the end? He was able to survive even after falling from Hercules, and fighting the Giganto Monster by himself on Mount Temza, so it would seem like he might have survived…

TL Note: Zagi fighting the Giganto Monster on Mount Temza happens in a sidequest, which is what is being referred to here.

A: He is an assassin hired by Leviathan's Claw, so the blastia arm was probably offered by Yeager via Ruins Gate. It's unknown whether the final transaction was really reasonable... As for his final moments, his corpse was never confirmed, so in that sense we should say that his life or death is unknown.

A: Since Duke wasn't looking for it, we at least know it wasn’t Elucifer’s. On that note, this is the Entelexeia who was forced to be used as an apatheia.

A: Barbos' words are not a concrete prediction, but rather, a kind of warning to Yuri about his way of life. If people knew that it was Yuri and his friends who got rid of the blastia, there would certainly be people who would resent them.

Q: Duke had complete understanding of the Enduring Shrine of Zaude, but yet Alexei's understanding was incomplete. How did each of them obtain their knowledge about Zaude?

A: Alexei gained his knowledge through fragments of a mishmash of ancient documents left behind by the Empire. Because of this, his understanding was in many ways incomplete. His own desires led to misinterpretation. On the other hand, Duke (who may have had firsthand knowledge at the time), gained accurate knowledge from the Entelexeia.

TL Note: The term used for mishmash can also mean miscellany, jumble, and mixture. It sounds like Alexei got his information from various (and possibly in some cases not completely correct), fragmented documents (so lacking information on some documents because of not being whole/full), which partially resulted in his faulty information - on top of his own desires causing him to read the intention of those documents in a way he wanted it to be, and not what it actually meant.

A: We don't think that's the case... (laughs) He probably just disappeared to somewhere gracefully.

TL Note: The term for "graceful" here can also mean noble, gallant, brave, or sportsmanlike. Basically, it sounds like Petite Wolf took the loss respectfully and bowed out.

Protodude: Mega Man Adventures was recently announced to great acclaim—can you share a bit more about what fans can expect? Will the Worlds Collide stories be included?

Udon: Mega Man Adventures is the new hardcover collection of the Mega Man stories originally published by Archie Comics, with each volume containing 12 issues. A special “Deluxe” edition featuring bonus items will also be available, with more details to come. In addition to the original stories, each volume will include a brand-new short story set during the same time period as the collected issues. The first of these will be created by Ian Flynn and Ryan Jampole. While the collections will not currently include the crossover issues with Sonic the Hedgehog due to rights limitations, this is something the team is actively exploring for the future.

Are you looking forward to the Udon Mega Man comic coming next year?

I would like it to be good, but I can't say I have the highest hopes right now, based on what we know. I don't like Udon as a publisher, the writer attached right now has next to no previous writing credits to his name for me to base my expectations off of, and they've also got known abuser Andrew Dickman doing some amount of art for the Free Comic Book Day issue. Not looking great.
